What does a postpartum doula even do?

As your postpartum doula, your physical and emotional well-being is my number one priority. It’s not just about the baby. YOU are important and worthy of care, just as much your beautiful newborn.

I strongly believe that the health of the family relies on the health of the mother. We cannot be the mothers we want to be if we are not taken care of first.

I strive to support the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of new mothers so that they can best take care of their babies and build the family they sought out to have.

What meant so much to me was that she also made sure to include my husband in conversations. She took the time to listen to his questions and concerns and always made him feel supported and involved, which really strengthened our confidence as a team going into parenthood and he was seen as a valuable part of this experience.

Home Visits

What does a home visit look like?

Because I tailor in-home support to each family’s needs, this can be difficult to answer. Overall, I assess each client where they are during that time and provide the emotional and practical support that they need now. All visits begin with a check-in.

And then, they could look like this:

  • Emotional check-in, help with breastfeeding, bring mother food and water, change out garbages, make beds, do one load of laundry, prepare meals for the week.

Or like this:

  • Birth story processing, provide self-care and healing education, prepare a sitz bath for mother, care for baby while she tends to her physical needs, discuss a practical plan to get better sleep.

Or this:

  • Provide education on normal newborn feeding and sleeping behavior, teaching mother how to use a breast pump and showing partners how to effectively bottle feed, education on infant massage.

This does not cover it all, but hopefully gives you an idea of what you can expect from how I provide postpartum care. Have something specific in mind? Just ask!

Home visits generally last 3-4 hours and can be purchased à la carte.

Sand and Sage Postpartum Care provides hospital doula visits for postpartum mothers.

Hospital Visits

I offer one hospital visit for clients who book my premium package, This usually happens when baby is at least 24 hours, depending on time of delivery. During this time, I can help with birth processing and provide a latch/feeding assessment, provide medical advocacy, and help the family with a plan with the transition home.

For families who’ve hired a birth doula, I will work closely with her to maintain continuity of care for you and maintain strong medical advocacy for your entire hospital stay.

*This service can be transferred to a home visit for birth center and home births.

Hospital visits can be purchased à la carte.

My breastfeeding journeys

Sand and Sage Postpartum Care is dedicated to helping mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals and supports postpartum doula clients.

I am so passionate about breastfeeding support because of my own personal story.

With my first baby I navigated a botched tongue tie release, revisions, a lip tie, mastitis, and severe anxiety around feeding. Despite this, I was able to breastfeed my son for over two years and my daughter for 1+!

I learned so much along the way and have made it one of my missions that new mothers have the support, education, and resources they need to be successful from the start.

If you’ve struggled with breastfeeding in the past, know you CAN reach your goals.
